SAMPLE PRAYERS

Prayers can be offered throughout the ceremony and not just in the prayer section shown in the sample ceremonies and in the Order of Service. Please feel free to choose as many prayers as you feel comfortable with.

Prayer #1 Typically an Opening Prayer

Father, hear our prayers for ______ and _____,

who today are united in marriage before your community.

Give them your blessings, and strengthen their love for each other.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Prayer #2 Typically an Opening Prayer

Our Father we thank you for the gift of marriage, for the beauty of intimate companionship, a companionship in which we can know and be known, in which we can share freely and be accepted completely. Thank you for this taste of Your great unconditional love for us. May this commitment be voiced by ________ and ______ today in this ceremony reflect uniquely to the world this great love and bring glory to Your name. And may it remind each of us of the purpose of our marriages and encourage us to fulfill the vows that we have made to one another. In Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer # 3 The Prayer for the Family

Written by the Late Pope John Paul II

Lord God, from You every family in heaven and on earth

takes its name. Father, you are Love and Life. Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, and through the Holy Spirit, fountain of divine charity, grant that every family on earth may become for each successive generation a true shrine of life and love.

Grant that Your grace may guide the thoughts and actions of husbands and wives for the good of their families and of all families in the world.

Grant that the young may find in the family solid support for their human dignity and for their growth in truth and love.

Grant that love, strengthened by the Sacrament of Marriage, may prove mightier that all the weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass.

Through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that the Church may fruitfully carry out her world wide mission in and through the family.

Through Christ our Lord, Who is the Way, the Truth, the Life for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer # 4 The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer # 5 The Lord’s Prayer Catholic Version

Our Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name;

Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Amen

Prayer # 6: Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin

Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
